TELAR PROJECT

 TEJIENDOELAMOR

A permanent project whose MISSION is to rescue, value, and diffusion of the ancestral practices merged together with contemporary applications to offer and share a new perspective of textile art and programmed fashion.(meditation and lunar cycles involved in the production process  to higher the body’s frequency)

The main objective is to reformulate the dynamic that exists between the community, their handcrafted projects, and the commercialization, their esthetic value, expression, and meaning.  It tries to break the current cycle of economic advantages taken against the indigenes community and those who are outcastes in Mexico.

The project uses fair trade for those involved and 50%of the income is used in the improvement of their houses, kitchens, gardens, bathrooms , rain water reserve, all using bio-construction techniques. It uses natural processes for production and ancestral techniques for their creation; the final product is a modern design that exemplifies the cultural dialog. The women are those who are primarily benefited. They are the main players who collaborate directly with everything involved in the dying, dressing the loom, backcombing, spinning the wool, and the weaving, as well as the exchange of techniques and knowledge, ideas and the design in the production of the creations.

Why is it indispensible to support these projects?

The people of San Sebatián have their roots in the Zapotec culture. Unfortunately today they face a delicate problem since they are losing their traditions, language and the knowledge of their cultural mother.

There has only been one generation that began the separation of their roots. Only the grandparents speak the Zapotec dialect and know  the medicinal plants, the legends of the area, and grow their own food.

In the area of the textiles, very few women warp and weave with a back strap loom or a pedal loom. The practice of this ancestral art is dying. One of the reasons is that the handcrafters don’t value their own work and they are not motivated to do it, beacause they are victims of mercantile abuse. On the other hand no one dyes their thread with natural pigments even though there is a great variety all around them.

The habit of creative development and games are limited and they are being substituted by the television.

In this community there is not another space except for the Art Studio for fostering and exchanging the community vision and their capabilities. 80% of the population is dedicated to carpentry which as a consequence has exploited the forest. Just a short while ago there was regulations put into place regulating chopping down the trees and a law for replenishing the forest but the practical result has been insufficient.

It is crucial that the consciousness is related to peace, collaboration and the understanding toward the arts, crafts and the earth.
